What The Papers Say
“As a rule, I trust the judgement of wasps”, writes Johnny Hayes. “Lunch at the Kings in Chipping Campden’s bustling square saw me make the acquaintance of two highly sophisticated little ‘jaspers’ who I shall call Abbott and Costello for no reason other than that one was fat and one was thin and that they were funnier than Laurel and Hardy!
“It was my birthday. The dun was shining and I wanted a treat. So did Bud and Lou! We ordered Half a Lobster with King Prawns (shell on), mixed salad coleslaw and potato salad, supplemented by a Whole Dressed Crab with similar accompaniments. Bed and Lou sipped on an ice cold Cranberry Juice while they waited for my meal, which arrived minutes after ordering. Rudely, I tucked into the splendid lobster before my winged companions had barely made an impact on their drink. Angrily they dive-bombed the luckless crustaceans adorning my table, grazing heartily on the sweet claw and rich crab meat. The obliging landlord of the Kings even produced a diversionary snifter of orange squash in a bid to tempt the black and gold gastronomes to leave my plate for the briefest of moments, but he gluttonous sky pirates allowed me no window of opportunity.
“I looked around – nobody else seemed remotely troubled by the insatiable insects. I had obviously chosen well from the extensive menu. Looking back perhaps I should have sampled the simpler delights of the lunch menu, the tempting sandwiches, baguettes, or even a bespoke Kings Burger. Do the a la carter diners tucking into anything from Vichyssoise or Goats Cheese Crostini and Balsamic Reduction starters or main courses of Grilled Skate Wing and Black Pepper and Capers Butter or a Gateaux of Herb Polenta Cakes or Poached Scottish Salmon have this problem? I doubt it!
“Pudding was a Raspberry and White Chocolate Cheesecake – the tart raspberry offsetting the sweetness of the chocolate delightfully. Now here’s a surprise. Bud and Lou had obviously had enough – no pudding for them and a moment of peace to savour the flavours.
“Relatively new management has led to appealing improvements at the Kings, along with quirky décor and sensibly price, imaginative food. Two top-of –the-range meals without wine cost £50.” And the stingy stingers? Well, they made off without even offering a few meagre pence towards their sumptuous feast. Wait till I see them again …”
